휘튼 칼리지를 졸업하고 댈러스 신학교와 캘리포니아 대학을 거쳐 애버딘 대학에서 박사학위를 취득했다. 1975-1989년까지 일리노이 주에 있는 트리니티선교신학교에서 구약학과 셈어족을 가르쳤으며 이후 9년간 미국 장로교회 교단에서 사역했다. 현재 테네시주 내슈빌에 있는 임마누엘교회를 섬기면서 'The Gospel Coalition'의 자문위원으로도 활동하고 있다. 저서 「A Passion for God: Prayers and Meditations on the Book of Romans」(Crossway, 1994) 「God's Unfaithful Wife: New Studies in Biblical Theology」(edited by D.
