D.F. 톨미는 Univeristy of the Free State에서 1992년에 "John 13:1-17:26 in Narratological Perspective"로 학위(Th.D.)를 취득하고 모교에서 전임 강사로 섬기다가 (1999년에 부교수로), 2003년 교수로 임명을 받아 후학들을 가르치고 있다. 이후 2004년 "A rhetorical analysis(A Rhetorical Analysis) of the Letter to the Galatians"란 논문으로 학위(Ph.D.)를 받았으며 현재 Univeristy of the Free State에서 신약학 교수로 있으며, 남아공의 대표적인 신학 저널인 Acts Theologica의 편집장으로 섬기고 있다.
