톰 스매일은 세인트 존스 신학 대학(st. John"s Theological College)의 부학장이었으며, C.S.루이스 센터의 이사이자 Sanderstead (South London)에 있는 All Saints" Church의 교구 목사였다. 개혁주의 신학자임에도 은사주의 운동의 지도자로 활동하면서, 은사주 의 운동이 지니는 한계를 인식하고 본서를 저술하였다. 저서로는 Once And for All: A Confession of the Cross, Windows on the Cross, The Love of Power or the Power of Love: A Careful Assessment of the Problems Within the Charismatic and Word-Of- Faith Movements, Charismatic Renewal등이 있다.
