예일 대학교에서 수학했으며(M.Div., Ph.D.), 현재 버지니아 신학교 교수로서 구약 언어와 문학을 가르치고 있다. 아울러 세계 성서학회(SBL) 북대서양 지구 책임자를 지냈으며(2011-12년), 북미종교학회(AAR), 북미동양학학회 (ASOR), 가톨릭성서협회 (CBA) 등 다양한 기관에서 활동해왔다. 저서로는 Reading Deuteronomy (Smith & Helwys, 2015), The Social Roots of Biblical Yahwism (Society of Biblical Liter -ature, 2004), The Apocalyptic Literature (Abingdon, 2003) 등이 있으며, New Oxford Annotated Bible, Harper Collins Study Bible, The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible에 서문과 주석 및 소논문을 기고하기도 했다
