피츠버그 신학대학을 졸업하고(Ph.D.) Dubuque Theological Seminary, Memphis Theological Seminary, Eastern Baptist Seminary, Columbia Seminary's Center에서 교수와 학장으로 재직했다. 최근까지 미국 장로교단과 Westminster John Knox Press에서 편집 위원으로 사역하면서 펜실베이니아에 있는 Central Presbyterian Church를 섬기다가 은퇴했고, 지금은 Pittsburgh Theological Seminary 이사로 활동하고 있다. 그의 저서 중 『칼빈 이해의 길잡이』(부흥과개혁사), 『장로교인의 질문과 답변』(한국장로교출판사), 『성경 해석자 사전』(CLC) 등이 국내에 번역 출간되었으며, 그 외에도 『The Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms』, 『Major Themes in the Reformed Tradition』, 『Introducing the Reformed Faith』, 『The Westminster Handbook to Reformed Theology』 등 수십여 권의 저서가 있다.
